What did you 'cut your teeth' to when it comes to music? I was talking to my birds daughtet (24 and no) and i was saying where she grew up with Bieber, Marrs,Beyomce etc i was getting my thrills lustening to Led Zep,the Who, Bowie (ziggy era) and many others. I know every generation has its idols but i really do think my lot (50 plus) really did get the very best.
Feel free to disagree kids.

Born in ‘78 and was brought up on Fleetwood Mac, Rolling Stones, The Clash, Bruce Spingsteen, Aerosmith, R.E.M, Tracy Chapman, Paul Simon, Bob Dillion, Neil Young, Paul Young etc
Basically the stuff I still listen to know predominantly, plus the grunge stuff from my teenage years - still go and see Pearl Jam play whenever they tour etc

It was punk and new wave first for me, Pistols, Stranglers, X Ray Spex then Blondie and PiL...then as we moved to the 80's it was into two tone, adam and the ants...then I heard the synthesiser, and from that point onwards that's all I was interested in, plus a sprinkiling of Talk Talk, TFF, Big Country etc etc

I think there are a couple of major differences in the game these days. Firstly, the 'stars' themselves just dont seem to have that star quality in the way Bowie,Bolan,Hendrix etc had it. Maybe its because nothing shocks anymore,all the good drink/drugs/sex scandals were told a couple of generations ago.
Then theres the whole 'mystery' aspect. There isnt any in this social media/techno world we live in. The main reason i loved the music press so much wasthat it was the only real place you got any acsess to your favourite bands whether it was photo's or interviews or just gossip and rumour. All very different today.

Like many over 50 - I know we had the best era...
First Single bought - Pilot January
First Album bought - Gary Glitter (liked the drums)
First Concert - Siouxsie and the Banshees
Local Bands followed : Siouxsie , Adam and the Ants , Art Squad,
I ran the college radio station and got a press pass that got me into any concert that I wanted to go to... Didnt get to use it as much as I wanted - but I still averaged 2 concerts a week. Some were local bands and some where bands that we had brought to college (Hatfield Polytechnic used to do "Rock goes to College" - until they tried inviting the Police , the Jam, and the Specials to the same gig).
We had the Eurythmics the week they first reached number one in the charts with "Sweet Dreams". That got us some better bookings
Getting into concerts in town were sweet.

I still love 80s music, and have a very varied taste in music. I have 5 go to stations on Pandora
1) REM - Losing my Religion
2) Art of Noise
3) Sting
4) Talking Heads
5) David Bowie
these stations seem to have most of my favorite bands covered.
Rediscovered some lesser known bands from the time

Haircut 100
Cocteau Twins
Modern English
Anyone else got some older lesser known bands...

then The Clash, Sex pistols The Jam, Elvis Costello, Graham Parker and Reggae
Ever since some singer songwriters. Americana alt country and Jazz with lots unmentioned greats throughout these eras too... but …
Modern digital pop such as So and so featuring so and so unfortunately doesn't resonate....

Slade, Sweet, T Rex and others like that.
That then got me into AC/DC, Motorhead, Lizzy, Saxon, Quo, Sabbath UFO, Maiden and many other bands. Still listen to it now.
Wouldn't like to be a kid now the music that's around now is fucking shit.

To anybody familiar with Stoke Newington what was the name of that gig venue and after hours bar just past the train station on Stamford Hill?
It's not an old pub or music hall...just an old shop which is narrow and extends quite far inside.
It's called the Mascara Bar these days but it had many different names before and I can't remember what they were.
Anyone?

NS - I wouldn't know who is in the Hot Rods now to be honest. In the early days I got to know a few of them from following them around and a little bit later on when Dave Higgs ran a rehearsal studio on the Rock. Southend had a great scene in the 70's and everyone knew everyone and the bands swapped members constantly.
